I’d be more inclined to Sotomayer if she hadn’t said “I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” Oh really? If I were to say a wise old white man would make a better decision than a Latina woman (which I believe is redundant since Latina is the feminine form), then I’d be branded racist immediately.

Then of course there’s “court of appeals is where policy is made.” Excuse me??

The thing I find so dang amusing is that many of the things that conservatives are crying foul on are things that have been said previously by Justices such as Antonin Scalia (lower courts often act as final arbiters/law “makers” in the 90% of the cases brought to the Supreme Court that the Supreme Court doesn’t take) and Clarence Thomas (on empathy being needed to be a Justice). Funny how they were silent when fellow conservatives said the same thing.

I do, indeed, Sotomayor. My opinion of her – based on almost nothing, at this point – is that I might disagree with her sometimes (as I do with President Obama), but I will respect how she came to her conclusions. Not to mention, my mother grew up in the Bronx and I love that accent!

As usual, I’m in total agreement with you. Fact is, I just wrote an editorial today quoting the president’s ND speech. But the great thing is: You and I don’t have to agree. It’s OK to express our feelings and not feel judged. Oh, how I wish more of my friends here in the Bible belt felt the same way. I’m telingl you, there is so much hatred and ignorance out there.

Glad to know that my friend, Kat, can return me to some semblance of thoughtfulness and mutual tolerance.
